What Are CS:GO Skins

Skins have been one of the most important elements of CSGO since the game’s launch. They are cosmetic items that can be encountered organically in-game, either through random drops or by opening special cases. They can also be acquired simply by purchasing them on the Steam Market or through skin trading.

What Are Cosmetic Items?

The main purpose of cosmetic items is to change the appearance of pieces of equipment such as weapons, gloves, knives, etc., and give them an interesting, more personal touch. They have no functional properties. However, Each of them has specific features that help distinguish it from all the other pieces available on the market. For example, CSGO Skins differ in their level of wear and their rarity, which of course affects their final price. On top of that, some of them stand out for their extraordinary designs, which were often created by the best artists in the gaming world. Such factors are important when assessing their value and determining their market price. CS:GO skins can be obtained for as little as $1 and as much as $10,000.

What Is CS:GO Wear Rating

CSGO Skin Wear (aka skin exterior or skin condition) is a special feature that is assigned to each skin based on its float value. Regardless of whether the player acquires the skin through an in-game drop or by means of skin trading, it will always have a pre-assigned float value, therefore a pre-assigned level skin wear rating. This particular factor determines the skin’s quality and its in-game looks. There is no way to improve the wear of a given skin. This means that what you see is exactly what you get.

What Is Skin Float Value

As aforementioned, the skin float value is the main determinant of the skin’s wear rating. It is represented by a number that varies between 0.00 and 1.00. Based on what the float value of a particular skin is, we can tell which level of skin wear it falls into.

What are CS:GO Skin Wear Levels?

There are 5 different wear levels in CSGO:

  • Factory New
  • Minimal Wear
  • Field-Tested
  • Well-Worn
  • Battle-Scarred

Each of them has a specific float value range assigned to it. They differ in the degree of wear and tear, and thus in the appearance of the skin and its market value.

Let’s now do a quick overview of all 5 levels of skin wear.

  1. Factory New FN

This is the best available condition for your weapon to be in. The most expensive CS2 skins are generally the Factory New ones. The float value at this wear level varies between 0.00 and 0.07. Factory New skins often look untouched, or barely touched at most. Their colors shine with freshness and there are no cracks or scratches that could negatively affect their market value. They are every gamer’s dream, and unfortunately what comes with that, is that they are also incredibly expensive. The prices of Factory New skins can be over $10,000 for a single item.

  1. Minimal Wear MW

The float value of Minimal Wear skins varies between 0.07 and 0.15. Items in this category, are the most popular option among players, due to the fact that their price is drastically lower than Factory New skins. At the same time, the differences in appearance are often minimal and amount to only a few scratches here and there. Investing in Minimal Wear skins is often a much more profitable business than in completely undamaged items, the prices of which can reach unprecedented amounts.

  1. Field-Tested FT

The float value of Field-Tested skins varies between 0.15 and 0.37. Their appearance may already be heavily affected by various scratches, dents and stains. Nevertheless, many players in the trade community continue to reach for items in this category because of the decent value for money they offer. After all, a few scratches don’t necessarily mean an item is worthless. The Steam Market is full of Field-Tested skins, which are still quite a rarity among CSGO players. Especially considering the fact that at this particular level of wear, the range of possible float values of skins is extremely wide, meaning that Field-Tested items, can either look brand new, or as if they have had a chance to prove themselves in at least a dozen wars already.

  1. Well-Worn WW

The float values of Well-Worn skins vary between 0.37 and 0.44. Their appearance very visibly indicates their state of wear. Therefore, you should be very careful when purchasing them, as some of them look completely deteriorated. This does not mean, of course, that it is impossible to find gems among them. Naturally, there have been some lucky people who, buying a skin at this level of wear, managed to get an item that looked barely touched. However, there weren’t many of them, and this is a much more difficult task than with the previously mentioned categories. Well-Worn items are a decent option for CSGO players without a huge budget to spend on in-game items.

  1. Battle-Scarred BS

The float value of Battle-Scarred skins ranges from 0.44 to 1.0. The level of wear in this category is by far the highest, which also means that the skin quality is very low. Some of them look completely damaged and just plain bad. Items in this condition are full of scratches, cracks, and dents. Unfortunately, they also account for most of the drops in the game. The only thing in their favor is their good price. However, some Battle-Scarred versions can still fetch hefty prices due to the rarity of a particular item.

Conclusions

The world of Counter Strike: Global Offensive is booming thanks to skin trading. The thriving economy of CSGO items is not only a major fuel for the growth of the Steam Market but also a great way for people to make money. Therefore, if you want to profit from the value of skins, the Float Value is a parameter you should be well aware of. After all, it is the decisive factor that determines the market value of an item. So, if you don’t want to make a big mistake and invest in a skin that isn’t worth its price, be sure to read our article. Thanks to it, you will know good quality skin when you see one.
